BMC’s delightful Mini tractor remains a favourite on any farm lucky enough to have one. Designed in 1965 to be used around farms for smaller jobs, it is lightweight and small but still has the power (see video - using all 948 cc of this engine to pull a sledge through the snow!!) and fully-functioning hydraulics to tackle a surprising number of tasks!
The hydraulic power unit is mounted above the engine and driven from the front crankshaft pulley, giving a powerful live-drive system. Striking in Nuffield's poppy red, it still has old English white paint for the wheels and grill.
Looking into the engine, it was developed from the 948 cc A series unit originally fitted to the Morris Minor, Austin A35's. The diesel engine was not successfully used in these commercial vehicles as it was notorious for being a bad starting engine with low compression, so it ended up being in the tractor and not the famous Mini car or mini van.
