Here at Tractor Spare Parts, we have a lot of knowledge and experience, which we have picked up after 20 years of working solely with Nuffield, Leyland, and Marshall tractor parts. Joanna and Wendy, who you will probably speak to when you give us a call, both have decades of experience working at Tractor Spare Parts. Although neither are trained engineers, both have the knowledge that you need to purchase parts for your Nuffield, Leyland or Marshall tractor.
However, sometimes they need a bit of help and Andrew is our main technical engineer and you will not find a better engineer. With a wealth of experience with the Leyland tractors from rebuilding our own vehicles, having customers' tractors through our workshop and of course helping customers with their thousands of tractors that have been repaired and restored over the phone, through email conversations and face-to-face conversations. Andrew is the go-to technical person when the more difficult questions arise regarding your Nuffield, Leyland or Marshall tractor. Andrew is our tooling designer too and he is responsible for many of the remanufactured parts, manufactured to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) specifications, that Tractor Spare Parts Ltd offers.
About The BMC and Leyland Parts Book
It is this knowledge and experience that we harness when the BMC and Leyland parts book fail us. We have master copies of the Nuffield parts book, Leyland parts books and Marshall parts books, which list the nearly 50,000 parts that make up the different models of Nuffield, Leyland and Marshall tractors. Everybody who works here at Tractor Spare Parts Ltd remembers part numbers, but none of us has a photographic memory (Dan, our main store man may be exceptional!) and to remember 50,000 parts is not something we can achieve. So, there are times when we have to look up the parts in the parts book.
This is all very well and 98% of the time the parts books are great and we can find the information that we need straight away. However, there are times when the information is incomplete, missing or hidden on a page of the parts book that you would not expect.
What the Parts Book Tells Us
The Leyland tractor parts books show us exploded diagrams of every section of the Leyland tractors. They show part numbers associated with each part on the diagram (well most!) and it is these OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) part numbers that we use as our references when we sell the parts. The parts books also show us which model tractors the parts fit, and any change points for different parts that were improved upon during production.
What Is Missing from the Parts Books?
What sparked my thinking about the Nuffield parts book was two conversations with separate customers about their Nuffield tractor front axles. We had to look up the information twice within a couple of weeks, and we realised that the information was not present in the parts book – an omission that we know about, but we thought it was wise to document it here for easy reference in the future.
Early Nuffield Front Axles
On the early Nuffield 4DM front axles with tractor serial numbers between DE1001 and DE5127 (so only the first 5000 tractors were made), there was a cranked arm, which is item 24 on the diagram below. This cranked arm has two bushes on it, but they are not listed in the parts book.
We know from experience that the bushes that you need are part number NT3004, which is a bush that is used in many different places in the Nuffield steering linkage.
The NT3004 bush is one that is used as an upper king pin bush on Nuffield 3DL, 4DM, 342, 460, 10/42, and 10/60 models, as well as some of the earlier Nuffield models (with varying change points). The NT3004 bush is fitted on the front axle trunnion pin of Nuffield, Leyland and Marshall tractors. It is also a steering cross shaft bush on some of the early Nuffield models. This bush also needs reaming during fitting.

So, this example helps to explain why we need to bring together literature published by Leyland, together with experience gained through our long career in manufacturing and selling tractor parts to ensure that you get the correct parts that you need.
Throw in an on-farm modification to a tractor, done during its 50-year lifespan, and you will see why we occasionally get stumped or ask for pictures or videos to aid our understanding of your tractor. We do get there in the end!
