The crankshaft is vital in any combustion engine, circulating engine oil under pressure to the moving components and allowing the crankshaft to convert a linear to rotational motion with enough power to tackle any task. Oil provides lubrication to the bearings, which is crucial in preventing friction. When this lubrication system breaks down, or there is dirt in the oil through poor filtration or through the engine components rubbing together, this can cause scoring in the crankshaft and even can cause the crankshaft to seize up, stopping your Marshall 702 tractor in its work. Thankfully there are options for the renovation of these engines and crankshafts, including either new crankshafts, or through regrinding your original crankshaft and fitting undersized main bearings and connecting rod bearings. Tractor Spare Parts Ltd can offer undersized crankshaft bearings in numerous sizes from standard size in 0.010” increments, and some 0.005” increments, up to 0.060” undersized, meaning that unless your crankshaft has broken or bent, we can probably regrind the crankshaft to bring it back to life. We can offer a crankshaft regrinding service where we can send you back with a reground crankshaft and the appropriate bearings, or if you are getting your crankshaft serviced locally to you then we can offer the bearings only in different sizes.
The oil pump is just as important, circulating oil throughout the engine. Without the oil pump working properly the reciprocating and rotating components of the Leyland 4/98 will seize up and your Marshall 702 tractor will come to a stop. When fitting a new oil pump to your Leyland 4/98 engine in your Marshall 702 engine it is important to check the backlash on the oil pump. Thankfully, the workshop manuals can help with how to do this, or we have also a series of helpful videos on our You Tube channel; one of which is about setting the backlash between the driven and driving gears on these oil pumps, part number 86K1585 – click here to see this video and subscribe to our You Tube channel.
Should the crankshaft or a part of the oil delivery system fail or become worn over time, low oil pressure and friction can cause serious engine damage to your Marshall.
